A Movement Has Begun
It is no secret that our schools are struggling. And if they are struggling, so are the children they have been entrusted to educate.
My name is Steve Finesilver. I have been a teacher and coach at my alma mater, George Washington High School in Denver, Colorado, for my entire career. I have taught thousands of children, many of whom I have also coached. Many have taken the life lessons they learned in the classroom, the weight room, and on the field and used these lessons of hard work, perseverance, and reaching for a goal to rise above their humble beginnings to achieve success in life.
But our schools are floundering, and some are failing. And many of the disadvantaged students I have taught are not receiving the help they could be given to overcome the challenges of their circumstances.
Hard Knocks & Dirty Socks: Through the Eyes of Coach
I have written a candid and personal book in which I share my experiences in public education over the span of decades. In it I present the proven and effective methods I have used to give young people value and the tools they can use to lift themselves out of the cycle of poverty and hopelessness in which so many are trapped. I've also included the personal stories of many of these students, with their permission, as well as the struggles of the Denver Public Schools and ways they can improve their approach to meet the real needs of these children and their families.

Our Purpose and Vision
My purpose for this website is to gather together and invite all concerned parents, community members, and the greater public to join me and others to push for the changes that are necessary. We owe it to our children, our community, our struggling families, and our country to take back the reins of public education and make it relevant and effective for all. This will create an inclusive, safe, and vibrant school where good things happen and children are embraced and loved.

The Time is Now
The need for reform is urgent and we have begun to make progress in talks with the DPS Administration. With support from school board members and many concerned and interested people—former students, public education donors, and the public—funds are available and can be allocated to meet the needs from the ground up and bring up bright, well-educated, hard-working contributors to our society. We must make these changes now in order to restore trust in our public institutions and most of all, to better the lives of millions.
Explore this website, read the book, sign up for updates and to post on the forum, and join us in improving children's lives. What better way could you find to make a difference in the precious lives of young people.
